"You're a perfect example of the Asylum mentality!"
Why, thank you! What a lovely compliment! I try to be helpful and amusing, despite my audio insanity.
"Obviously, he meant most satisfying sound. Is there one satisfying sound? Maybe not, but since he didn't specify, he probably wants someone's opinion on this as well."
Well not so obviously to our fellow inmates; some thought he was asking for the best sub-$1000 DAC, and named their favorites.
I just don't understand asking the question "which sounds best"? That is highly dependent on so many things, starting with "objective" questions like supported formats and interconnects but quickly moving to highly subjective questions like "well, what kind of sound do you like?" IME, most people cannot describe what they like, but they sure as heck know it when they hear it.
Listening for yourself is best. I still patronize certain bricks-and-mortar stores because of their liberal loaner policies, and because I have come to know the sales associates and their tastes in sound, and they have come to know mine. I have literally never regretted anything purchased this way.
Similarly, there are print reviewers whose tastes are worn on their sleeves. Their commentary on various products have led me towards (or away from) some products that are not carried by my local stores and hence must be ordered "unheard". Only once have I regretted one of these purchases.
What I have never done is make a purchasing decision based on the opinions of a random, unknown bunch of crazy people (sorry, fellow inmates!). Use them as a starting point to launch from, sure.... but not to make a final decision.
So, if asked, I always strongly recommend you listen, listen, listen....
Cerebrate!
