"So, OP, how do you want to define "best"? One that is intended primarily for Redbook reproduction? One that supports every format under the sun, including MQA (oh, the horror!)? Does it have to have balanced outputs? No op-amps? Great op-amps? The one that "sounds the best"? Are you looking for validation on a choice that you've really already made in your heart? One that will make your friends nod sagely and say, good choice? :) :) :)"
You're a perfect example of the Asylum mentality!
Obviously, he meant most satisfying sound. Is there one satisfying sound? Maybe not, but since he didn't specify, he probably wants someone's opinion on this as well.
I'm in the same boat. I already have a good headphone amplifier and some good interconnects lying around and sufficient space for these, really, mini sized DACs. I don't use balanced and many of these DACs are touted for their low distortion balanced measurements, but I would assume they all do well on single-ended output as well and balanced output seems to be a standard anyway among these sub-$1000 DACs or any DAC hovering about $1000.
The Topping D90 was already recommended and I'm wondering about how robust are the rear connections as I wouldn't want an early failure at the $1000 budget.
Right now, with the Covid-19 power down, my $100 SMSL is sounding just fine and now I know that I like Redbook sound and I'll be ready to buy soon as well.
