RE: DAC for Red Book CD's

Me too for Audionote.
I have a kit version; ANK DAC 4.1x (the upgraded version with better parts and signal transformers) and it's so good I'm lost for words! But I'll try.
In no particular order.
Detailed (yet presented smoothly as good valve gear can do); I'm hearing quite a lot more on familiar CDs - startling
Transparent; the cleanest 'window' to the sound that I've ever heard from CD; presence of the performer is impressive.
Natural! The natural tones, timbres, character of instruments.
Smooth and a touch sweet, but not by rolling off the top end or adding anything artificial (well I can't detect anything).
Tight firm tuneful bass (I don't like mentioning hifi terms but if I don't someone is bound to ask).
The sum total to me is 'organic', live sounding, highly enjoyable.

I also have a Lector CDP707 which goes some way towards this kind of sound, but can't match it. Nothing else I've heard (including Gryphon Scorpio, Accuphase) comes near.

Audionote or ANK may be out of reach of the OP but Lector at the right price might be considered.

As ever, this is a personal opinion affected by my tastes in music and hifi; yours may vary.
