Re: FRENCH ART - more on tweaks, STEVE and STEVEN

Hi Claude,

Thanks very much for the usefull info on U1 and U2.

I agree with your analysis on the very high slew rates of the LT part. Since the AD825 is getting rave reviews for audio application everywhere, maybe it is the best and safest bet, and we only need TWO for the DAC only mode!

I finally did some tweaks on the DIO this weekend. I removed the two output caps and jump-wired them. I also removed the two .25" output phone jack and used the RS gold plated RCA socket instead, so I can directly hook up my IC on it. They really made a huge difference for the sound. The sound becomes pure and very listenable. I don't know which one contributed the most, the short-wired output caps or the lack of the phone plug to RCA adaptor?

During the tweak, as I traced down the audio output line, I found it's being fed back to the ADC input. This means that even if we don't use the ADC, the portion of the circuit is still working and drain current. But if we plug in the ADC input phone plug, this feedback will be disconnected, and the ADC input will take what comes in from the plug. So I put in the phone plug to RCA adaptor I used before for the audio output, and short the RCA side to ground. I tried to plug in and pull out this grounded plug, but couldn't hear too much difference. But I just feel it should be better to ground the ADC input.

I also noticed when I plug in the daughter card which contains the DAC chip, the background noise becomes much bigger. I'm considering replacing all the cheap resistors on the signal path with high precision metal film resistors. What do you think?

Keep us posted for your new findings.

Regards,
Steven
