Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: Interesting speculation - care to elaborate Todd?

"Had the CD adopted the 50 kHz sample rate, I really think audio would have taken a totally different path than the one it has taken. (Although vinyl may have gone the way of 8-track playback.) "

I am not so sure 50kHz gets one out of the woods - but I agree that a higher sampling frequency and a slightly better bit depth would have made CD so much better.

Could we be saying if something approaching HDCD or DVD-A/SACD had been done, life would be OK?

As it stands right now, though, analog brickwall filters are not used anymore - due to oversampling - and only older recordings had it in the source (easy to avoid).

I think it is just taking a LONG time to master the technology. The latest batch of redbook players (Arcam, SimAudio, Bel Canto, Creek, etc.) sound better than ever.
