I recently looked at updating my front end. I looked at players that will play multiple formats. I have a cal audio sigma II dac(24/96)/delta transport and a gw labs upsampler. I wanted to simplify things a bit and get one really good unit, but after shopping around I think I will keep my current system.Yes. Things sound a bit less digital with the upsampler, a bit more extension, soundstage, etc...but the difference is not that great. I do not pretend to be an ee so I can't say how my dac really gains by the upsampling. While there was a noticable improvement, it was subtle.
Having tubes in the output stage does not mean you have to put up with muddy bass or "tube" colorations. Rolling tubes in my dac has more influence on my system than did upsampling or cables. Some tubes just sound better/different and with a tube dac you can experiment and find what works best for you in your system. Having the upsampler just helps accentuate these differences.
FWIW I found the trasport also makes a significant difference in the sound, but your mileage may vary.
