so far, all the upsampling CDPs or DACs I have tried had that artificial sounding air on top. The DCS stuff has a nice naturalness with massive amount of air, but somewhat slow-ish sounding to me.You are right in that without upsampling, the music gets more *life* (presense and immediacy ) and improved sense of transient delivery. It seems to me that this is the area non upsampling and/or filterless design has the edge over upsampling digital.
Even with various flavour differences amongst the CDP/DACs based on the same design, there is an overall shift in presentation of the music between upsampling and non-upsampling digitals.
Etherealness and organicity are good, but without other bits, ( you called it 'spooky' :-)) the music can get boring and lose the soul. I try to strike a nice balance within my system.
Many listeners seem to enjoy the *air* thing much like SACD playback, but frankly, I think the soundstage thing is so overrated.Whoelse is making good upsampling digital?
I liked what the Nagra DAC1 did, but the jury is still out.
