To be honest, I only listened to one cd (Mingus Ah Um) on the 75v connected directly to preamp and not going through the dcs equip. (You know, I figured if I got it, I better use it...). As I recall (I'd do it again now, but I'm in Singapore for another 2 weeks), it sounded VERY good suggesting that the "oversampling" we talked about earlier is working. Again, my immediate comparison is with the scd-1 (using redbook). I found the sound of the 75v without the dcs was still better than the sony WITH the dcs (never tried the sony without the dcs when I did this comparison -- so many combinations, so little time...and no DBT in sight!). The big difference for me was that the 75v had the "shimmer" on the cymbals that seems to very slowly fade away. Also, the soundstage was very wide and deep.If I'm really honest with myself, I'd say that the dcs upsampling makes a difference, but not all that much. It provides even more of that shimmer sound (transparency I suppose), more detail and slightly (very slightly) better imaging. Mainly, the dcs continues to take the layers of gauze off of my speakers. If I was to try and quantify the difference, I'd say that the 75v alone improved things 75% with an additional 25% from the dcs upsampling. The total 100% represents probably a 2-fold improvement over the sony redbook. It really is that startling to me.
BTW I hate to even guess how cheap you might be able to get the 75v for in Japan with the trade in...I'm jealous.
