Re: Noise problem with DCS DElius

I have traced the problem ( after 2 days of troubleshooting ) by
systematically working with one unit at a time, that the problem is
probably due to an errant Pioneer CD Changer. I have two Pioneer PD F19
changers hooked up via a Meridian 518 processor to the Purcell and then to
the Delius.

The changers apparently send a signal even when not playing, but while the
power is on, as the Delius will 'lock' on to the source. I discovered that
when the Meridian was switched to a different source such as a DVD player
the Delius would NOT lock and would instantly mute.

When the noise occurred the Delius was obviously not in mute mode and also
the display showed that the signal was solidly locked to the source. This
was eventually traced to the Pioneer CD changer. Apparently, even when the
CD changer is in STOP mode it sends a digital signal to the Meridian and
ultimately to the Delius. Intermittently it sends a signal that the Delius
does not like and the delius then outputs noise ( a loud scratch noise
almost like the sound generated by a Pink noise generating unit.

I know the Meridian and Purcell are not responsible as I could reproduce the
problem by connecting the Changer directly to the Delius.

I also know that the cables are not involved as these too were switched and
eliminated as the source of the problem.

I am glad that I think I have isolated the source of the problem but am also
very curious and puzzled as to the nature of the problem. From an
engineering standpoint it would be useful to see if the Delius can be made
to recognize these aberrant non musical signals from the source and more
importantly not pass the noise on to the amp and speakers to prevent damage.
