Hi ChrisThe latest Purcell does indeed convert PCM (at any sample rate) to DSD, in addition to the high sample rate dual AES output option. The IEEE1394 'Firewire' ports can be specified at the time of ordering. Mine is a late 2001 model, and although it has provision for the ports they aren't actually installed. Older models with or without the provision can be upgraded to include them, with the cost of the work varying according to the age of the unit.
The Delius and Elgar DO NOT convert DSD to PCM; the Ring DAC processes DSD natively. For SACD (and CD) playback the Verdi/Purcell/Elgar+ combination is unmatched in my experience. I only installed it after auditioning ALL the viable alternatives, and to my ears it represents the state of the art at this moment in time, and most certainly worth "bothering with".
Best regards
John Carter
