Re: SACD in Japan

To my surprise, I found I could probably be fooled in an A/B test using my 777 and a hybrid disk. I was surprised because I love the SACD sound and have nothing but bad memeories of standard digital. Granted, this wasn't a very good test because the 30 second wait for switching may be too long for my musical memory. And my system is not very detailed.

But there would be no fooling me with with extended listening. After a few minutes of standard CD sound, the music starts to sound closed in, pinched, forced, and disagreeable. It is comparable to trying to focus your eyes on something too close to your nose. Strain happens after a while. Some of this may be the 'subliminal irritation' of PCM that Ed Meitner talks about. With SACD, though, I can listen for hours because the sound is open and easy.

For me, SACD means no more digital headaches. Now, that's a pretty good A/B test.
