My point isn't that the scd1 is the best thing that will ever be made for sacd. My guess is that the build quality you would like to see will be evidenced by the Accuphase 75V-100 transport combo this fall alone. My point is that say what you might about sony parts, layout etc. the ultimate judge is the listener in his/her system. And after listening to lots and lots of rather expensive systems, it isn't clear that putting in $10 parts for $1 parts is going to make that much of a difference when we are talking about a quantum jump from one format to another. Listen, I have a Jadis tube preamp (JP80) that is all hand wired and soldered with the best of the premium parts. Does it really sound that much better than, say, an Audio Research Ref Two at 1/2 the price, or an AR LS25 at a quarter the price. Not really.

The ultimate judge will be ears, and this is where I disagree with you about your earlier point. To me, the improvement of sound is quite evident and desirable. I spent over twice as much for a dcs purcell/delius combo for upsampling and it just isn't as good as the sony. Will we get better qualiity players than sony -- your point is well taken that we will and for a competitive price. (Given that most people are getting the scd1 for about $3500 street price, I tend to doubt that high end players from the likes of Wadia, Mark Levinson, Burmeister, etc. will be anything in this price range -- if they keep their typical pricing structure you are still looking at the $5K plus range up through 10K. However, I don't doubt that the ML or Burmeister for $10K plus up to $30K (Burmeister land) will be better than the sony. However, I'm just really happy to see a product like the sony that outperforms my dcs/wadia cd redbook setup for about a fourth the price).

As for your friend who works for sony -- too bad, he might want to look elsewhere for a job and a company he can endorse. It is always a shame when people dump on their own company. Tell him that I have other sony equipment (G70 crt projector and two 850dvd players) and find the equip to be very good from performance and quality build (low maintenance).
