Re: SACD in Japan

The question of how these machines sound from Sony and Technics with DVD-A are academic. The secondary tier of manufactuers are gearing-up
production of SACD and DVD-A. Let's judge the formats upon thoes machines.
I believe Werner Olgers in E-site Visions in Audio as well as tech blurbs in Stereophile have made mention that SACD/DSD has been edited
in PCM due to lack of SACD-capable equipment. In their glossy ads, Sony is loathe to mention that their precious signal must go thru the hated PCM conversion. To dovetail this with personal experience, I listened to one of Sony's first demos at the L.A. Stereophile show in which one of the cuts played was introduced by Mr. Kawasaki (sp.)
as an "Unedited cut" begging the audience off from judging SACD upon
such a rough cut. This unedited cut of classical music was the most awesome demo I have ever been witness to. Unedited SACD was breathtaking. Perhaps with the conversion to PCM now eliminated from the recording/archiving chain, we can hear more sonically from SACD in the future. Am not an EE, so take what I say with a grain of salt. To my ears unedited SACD destroyed edited SACD, which was better than CD.
