I did not say that the Sony SCD-1 was awful. In fact, it is very good. It just is not great. It is all a matter of perspective. If you live with ordinary stock high end commercial sound then the Sony is very, very impressive. If you tweak things way, way more than the commercial fare then you have a different perspective. Then the Sony sounds dry, compressed and lacking a trully holographic soundstage. By the way, I described what I was hearing to a person at Sony and he totally agreed with me. In fact, he feels that all Sony electronics are not very good!!! He has listened to the hard discs playing directly into the Meitner DACs and he says it is a whole different level. Way, way better. The SCD-1 has $1.00 op amps in the output stage. The output stage is very long with many filters. The output stage does not have decent power supply bypass caps, has power supply jumpers and even has a coax wire connected via connectors from the main board to the output board. It's output board is grounded by a large copper bar that no way could transmit high frequencies, etc. If you were to redo the power supplies and replace the whole output stage with a totally tweaked out tube or FET stage it would blow your mind. Up to the DACs the SCD-1 is trully state of the art. I am sure you are enjoying your SCD-1 and it will bring you much pleasure until something much better hits the pavement. Believe it or not, there will be much, much better SACD players and they will be much cheaper.Ric Schultz
