...MOFI's Ellington "Blues in Orbit", Telarcs sampler and "The Very Tall Reunion Band", Sony's McLaughlin, DiMeola, DeLuca "Friday Night...", and AudioQuest's "Blues Masters", and a few other Sony titles.I wanted to like the SA1, but it just plain didnt sound good. Conjested sounding on the "Very Tall" CD, lacking in dynamics on the AQ disc [compaired to XRCD's of the same songs]. None of the discs had a good believable soundstage...the MOFI was the best of the lot, but nothing to crow about.
All the discs with the execption of the Sony's are hybrid's, and they all sounded better in a conventional CD player. The "Very Tall Reunion Band" was a perticularly interesting expirament. It's a live recording using DSD gear. Terribly conjested in the midrange in the SA1...very annoying to listen to. Drop the same disc in a regular CD player and you get a very enjoyable performance.
It's possible the SA1 I had is defective...Marantz is going to replace it...I'll keep the group informed.
Unitl I hear otherwise I gotta give SACD the big thumbs down. Really bums me out...I wanted to like it.
