I use my Model 8 with the 296 too - connected via I2S - sounds darn good to me... anyways, I would suggest getting transport and dac of the same manufaturer - rationale being that the inherent advantages built in by the manufacturer to minimise jitter, sound etc would not be lost through inappropriatel;y pairing bewtwenn those of different manufacturers.
