I'll take a shot. The SACD format is completely different from normal CD's. Thus, the digital stream is incompatible with whatever DAC you're currently using. Furthermore, the SACD player will not output a digital stream for SACD discs anyway, so the DAC becomes completely useless.
Now, most SACD players _will_ put out an SPDIF stream when playing normal CD's, and so you can continue to use your DAC for normal CD playback if you want to. However, this means you end up with two connections to your preamp (analog from SACD player, plus output from your DAC) that you have to switch between when going from SACD to CD. Furthermore, most upscale SACD players are actually very good CD players as well, so the external DAC might be needed.
Anyway, to recap - the player MUST be changed, as your current cd player/transport won't understand SACD discs. Your DAC will probably continue to work, but _only_ when playing regular CD's.
