I have an Elgar_plus in my system alternatively fed from a dCS 972 profi DDC. This combination can upsample PCM or convert to DSD.Parallel to this I have an ICL 24/96 tube output DAC from Japan and a AN DAC1 and DAC3 in the same system.
The ICL (cosing all of ca. $800) is the equal of the dCS combo and perhaps even better when fed an upsampled 88.2kHz signal from the 972 and that compared to the 176.4 fed to the Elgar_plus.
The AN products are also the equal or better than the dCS products without an upsampled signal.
This a purely subjective assessment of course but I must say I have respect for the technical capabilities of the dCS products. That said they don't necessarily "sound" better for it.
