I hooked up Meridian 506 with dCS combo via kimber illuminati digital coax cable and dCS to Jeff Rowland concentra integrated amp via balanced analogue cables. I also hooked up 506 to Concentra directly with "cheap" rca jacks I use for TVs. Then I try to a/b the output from 506/dCS combo upsampled to 24/292 and output from 18 bit 506 directly by switching the input selection of Concentra. The result: it must be something wrong with my ears or the room (very wide open living room)or what. I could not hear much difference at all! In fact, they both sounded almost identical and seamless when I kept switching backand forth. I spent about 2 hours with different discs... What am I supposed to look for to hear the difference? 506 is a used unit costing $700 plus $2 rca cable while dCS combo plus cables cost well above 10X!!! Am I better off with a highend CD player like Wadia 861? or should I keep on trying a better combo transport???? Help.
