When a DAC "loses" bits, it's the DAC's error-correction algorithm "filling in the missing bits"...But upsampling will *not* fix this problem. Why? If the transport misses reading bits off the CD, it does not matter if the error signal is fed to an upsampler or a DAC. Now the upsampler could have a better (or worse) error-correction algorithm, which would improve (or degrade) sonics relative to the DAC.
