As I understand it processors can sometimes lose bits so that what starts out at 16 bits can end up as little as 13. Upsampling can avoid this loss. However you cannot create more relevent bits than were there in the first place so you are right in suspecting a bit of marketing hype is involved.However as against that it can be very effective as is witnessed by our Meridian 861 not corrupting the fidelity of a quality analog signal with an upsample followed by a down sample, something I would never have believed possible unless I had heard it with my own ears on my own system.
