I've now had a chance to do extensive a-b comparisons of the dCS Purcell/Delius with and without my Placette dual mono active preamp in the signal path. I've decided that if I use the 6v setting on the Delius...and then attenuate the signal using the preamp...I get the lowest noise floor and greatest clarity and liquidity, and the least grain. The Placette also diminishes a digital glare that I hear when I run the dCS gear direct to my amp. This was my initial impression...but I got sidetracked by a review by Jonathan Scull (whose opinion I respect) in Stereophile. He felt that the dCS gear sounded best when driving an amp directly...as opposed to running the signal through some very, very outstanding preamps.
