Sounds exactly how I would describe the lovely looking but tearfully boring Luxman DA-06 DAC that I once owned. Nice enough DAC but I think they were trying to emulate vinyl and went way too far.The Luxman DA-06 is OK if you primarily enjoy sleepy time music with all of the detail polished off smooth as a newborn baby's butt. This $5000 DAC is only suitable for simple female vocals, smooth jazz, or unoffensive elevator music.
Rock music? FEHGEDDABOUDIT !! Too smooth, lacking detail, and rolled-off at the frequency extremes.
Refreshing to see an honest review but a good reminder to NEVER trust the mainstream audio press when it comes to sound quality reviews. I use them mainly for pictures, features, specs, and pricing.
