Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

It would seem that...

some folks are downright militant about their "complete-rip-and-replace" upgrade strategy. ;)

I've followed the path of using separates since I was a teen in the 70s. With the music system, the last thing I want is for the high gain moving coil stage to be merely inches away from a 500 joule power supply! I use the same strategy with the HT using a separate processor and power amp. With my not yet completed kitchen/family room remodeling project, I'll be able to isolate the massive multi-channel power amp in a closet while the processor and cable box will be located on a small floating shelf. Should I choose to upgrade past 7.1 or 2k video capability, I find no practical reason to replace the 70 lb. power amp.

If that's your thing, so be it! Here's perhaps the most overblown example of that approach - the McIntosh MA12000. For a mere $14k, it comes fully loaded and checks all the important boxes:

Two giant blue meters
Halloween themed green LED backlit tube window
Tons of knobs to twiddle
Block diagram printed on chassis
Convenient cup holder
Integrated (upgradable?) DAC
