"If the "added" processing algorithms cannot be made to display closely similar sound to the sound of the disc at its natural bit rate when combined with a good but simple analogue filter, then the interpolation is damaging the information in the data stream."Hello Peter,
I guess it still would be tough to get the definitive 'sound' pegged regardless of what deck is used, as each imparts its own signature on the music contained therein. The only two filterless units that I know of are yours and 47 Labs Flatfish combo, so maybe somebody can get a loaner and compare. I guess my point is that people are getting hung up on the latest buzz words and 'smart' people are saying their way is the best way.
It seems to me that it all comes down to whether or not the player, any player, sounds 'right.' I've had the good fortune to have listened to some very nice players that just missed the mark a bit and maybe didn't sound like that note being played on a real piano or blown through some trumpet.
I'm generally in the 'less is best' camp, but I remember running a CDP directly through the amps and not being thrilled with the sterile sound. The preamp added something, even though one would think that all of the crap inside would degrade the signal passing on to the amp/speakers. Go figure?
Chris
