You are mistaked. If you feel that the Genesis did upsample, how would you explain the transfer of 96khz over a toslink to the dac?

Many always assume that when the bit depth is expanded, padding is added to the "top" or just as an effort to pad the data frame. You can in fact split the waveform and shift the peaks toward the MSB of the positive and |negative| portion. (or fill the center) This is where dither comes into play. Think of it as cleaning up the nasties for both the lsb of the positive and negative waveforms.

Hopefully this isn't too simplified.
