I would guess that I was one of the first inmates to use upsampling being a dCS user with a ( hardware) upsampler since something like 1999.I liked it for the initial few years feeling that it got rid of some of the upper frequency harshness on orchestral strings and providing a more spacious sound.
As I became more aware of the negative effects* of upsampling and as non upsampled replay became better and better over time due in a large part to improved digital filter design, I became less enthusiastic about it. I abandoned it completely when dCS allowed use in their designs of an asymmetric filter ( no pre-ringing) with 44.1 samples.
When changing to the latest version of dCS DAC I also auditioned the matching upsampler and my opinion did not change. So my old dCS Paganini upsampler lives in a box in my spare room. However if you do not have access to an asymmetric or apodizing type of filter then upsampling may still have something to offer.
* Spatial inconsistency especially with DSD and a kind of subliminal listener fatigue.
