In the case of the dCS upsampling products they started out as a mastering studio "tool" and were no even called upsamplers but rather data rate converters. Originally intented to "downsample" various formats of digital masters to CD redbook they were designed to go from any format to any other format (assuming PCM originally). At this time dCS didn't even have a consumer product. By accident one of dCSs professional distributors "discovered" the effects of upsampling CDs to higher data rates in conjunction with a dCS professional DAC. They, dCS, didn't set out to desgin an "upsampler" but the use of their professional model 972 DDC in consumer applications certainly started a major trend in digital playback.Garth
