As dCS conceded, ‘we have found that upsampling reveals information that is present in the master source, but which is not audible when the CD is played back normally. Upsampling cannot increase the amount of information in a signal and the exact mechanism behind the perceived sonic improvements is currently not entirely clear. We are continuing our research into this subject.’ < <Come on! Does this sound like the engineering dept or marketing? Audiophiles are buying into 24/96, so let's sell em some.
IMO, they'll eventually find that the perceived sonic improvement is actually distortion from the non-integer upsampling algorithm.
