The equipment is really no more expensive than it always was if you compare like with like. The original "classic" range was replaced by the Paganini range and,taking account of inflation etc. they are roughly the same price - Paganini may even be slightly cheaper.
Of course dCS have introduced two more expensive ranges since, but they are not replacements but additions.
It's difficult to compare with other brands as the functions available on the dCS are not replicated elsewhere. However the obvious contenders for state of the art such as MSB or Bricasti ain't cheap either by any measure.
Yes , there are some cracking DACs at lower prices these days.
You may find it of interest if you ever get the chance to play with a Vivaldi using your own music and in your own time.
