Lummy,
If everyone thought the same, there would only be one CD player. Luckily we all have our contributing viewpoints. For the remote, yes, its a weak point, I agree. Even so, Simaudio does not have a dismissive atitude in my opinion. I have gotten good service out of them, i.e. extra puck for Eclipse, and a loaner (along with help of dealer) so I can audition the Andromeda, that was a bit of a setup, being 70 pounds, and with spikes.
Top mechanisim, well, living near Seattle, power goes out a lot, and I do not want a favorite CD stuck in the player. Seems like a stupid point, but we have multiple outages a year sometimes. Also drawers can be another mechanical thing to go wrong. It does take a little getting used to. I will go thru some inconvenience for good sound. Puck is OK as long as it does not get lost, I always keep it where it belongs. I did forget to close the lid for a few days, some dust got in player, but that will happen in any case I never needed the backup puck for the Eclipse.
My Eclipse and Andromeda have never had a failure to read or failure to play. And no repairs ever needed. But that is common on most CD players.
Regarding sound quality: Sorry for excessive comments. I am in a choir and I notice music gets loud and soft easily and raucous and smooth too. Our director varies dynamic range and pace quite a bit, much rubato and accelerandos.
Overpriced? Well, its 79 lb shipping weight, maybe some of it is lead, I do not know, but it does have a giant power supply, which is goodness to me. It seems to me the Marantz 7s1 had a similar looking power supply to the cheaper 11s2, but it must use higher quality components. It would have been nice to see the innards on the simaudio website. They do show Eclipse innards including a big power supply.
When I was shopping for other players, none (of what I could find) could Eclipse the Eclipse (sorry) until I stepped up to a higher price point. Although the DV-50 (Esoteric seemed even more detailed than Eclipse) was very good, system incompatibility prevented my purchase. Alas I did not try the X03SE, or SA11s2 or 7s1. Like you and I realize, its all a matter of taste, (Honda versus Toyota or Acura, etc). The DCs items I think are UK, so price is a bit high at this time of weak dollars, but if it sounds best, so be it.
Looking forward to your comments, if possible, on comparisons of Andromeda versus Esoteric (X03SE?), EMM, DCS, etc. Especially Supernova.
And of course its hard given limitations on time allotted for (if they will be allowed to leave owner's room) listening, , and when units must be returned.
Thanks
Bill
