Hi Todd,
Reading peter moncrieff's piece on iar-80 i gather that the perceived improvement when the dCS gear came out was due not to the 'upsampling' per se (given that 'upsampling' is nothing more than oversampling) but to the noiseshaping filter used. Also, any evaluations weren't long term so i gather the noise or hash you are talking about didn't appear or wasn't noticed (and most of these guys are over 50 anyway with reduced HF hearing!).
When DVD came out there was an editorial in Stereophile saying, why use 96khz? It's incompatible with Redbook. The story seems to be one of the big corps retaining property rights to digital sources. Once a format becomes standard, companies have to come up with other tricks to keep themselves in the market. But they also have to retain back compatibility so the engineering gets more complicated. SACD, DVD, DVD-A, DAD, BluRay, Minidisc, VHS, Beta, XBOX, the list never ends.
In any case, noiseshpaing is inherent to digital, and there are several ways to skin a cat as you know. I am using a nonoversampling MHDT Labs unit using the philips TDA 1541, no clock except the one in whatver source i'm using, and a one tube buffer. Locks onto DVD via optical from the DVD player, SPDIF from my computer, and sounds fine generally. Does not have the 'air and space' effect and tight bass of some other machines, and does not reject any jitter, but sounds generally pleasing and preserves most of the relevant information. It also definitely does not have that hash noise riding on the signal that you are talking about and that put me on the upgrade carousel originally in the late 90s.
Probably 20k$ later - and wiser- , I have gone minimalist and have tempered my expectations with regard to CD sound.
One step forward, 2 steps back. It's the story of capitalism.
