"So we should only enjoy music when it's live?"
No, but why separate the performers from the listeners? Both can and should do both. IMO it is a phyrric victory to spend som much energy reproducing performers in the living room. (phyrric: when one side wins, but almost everyone dies anyway)
"You think those claims were literal?"
Almost nothing is literally true, meaning 'truth' is relative. If you designed a scientific experiment at the time, no, I'm sure someone would have distinguished. The point is about people's previous experience and perspective, not the literal truth.
I agree with you about half-truths, it's crazy how easily people believe them. But there is no such thing as, or at least not enough time for, the 'full truth'.
"stressful traverses in life."
That's sort of why I collect gadgets, indeed. Whenever I'm down, I go to 'upgrade' something. Whether it is a good practice is questionable. And no, I haven't thrown away all of mine, üartly because I am not convinced they might as well be in my junkpile as anyone else's!!
"dangerous trend"
well, I mean, not more dangerous than making weapons but similar in its output of waste nonetheless. The Japanese have a saying, 'business is war' and I tend to agree.
"hypnotized"
no doubt. After about 10 minutes one's critical faculties are much reduced. For some, there are no critical faculties to begin with...this is exactly what tv news (and governments) take advantage of. People are led into believing things through pure insinuation and suggestion. My favorite example is people's belief that Bin Laden was responsible for the twin towers bombings...a claims that is based on no hard evidence, just repetition from those for whom it is convenient that we so believe.
"instrumental"
Mozart was 'saying' something with his instrumental work, it doesn't need to be vocal. Interpretation, though, can go any which way.
"iPods"
Don't get me started. My wife wants a new one...because the old one has a problem talking to the new version of iTunes. Why would you want to throw more money at hardware when the software is forcing you to upgrade? The situation is the same in the computer and high end audio industries...money needs to be made, so new formats are being thrown at us all the time. At least 24/96 is 'compatible' with redbook.
"fraud"
means to me, telling people that something is new and improved when it is just the same old...and the same old in this context is the need of the large corporations to make money. Advertising is crucial...but you seem to be pissed off at ASRC exclusively, which is kind of like being pissed off at military hardware only if you are currently being bombed. It's too little, too late.
"sense of rhythm"
you wouldn't be white, would you? actually, you should stick with it; sense of rhythm improves with practice. It amounts to getting the left and right sides of your brain to work together, not something white men are specialists at :)
"SUV"
I've got a low pressure turbo, which burns a lot of gas quite easily when you gun it. Shite.
"gadgets" again.
I do kind of regret getting rid of my EAD CD player. That one was downright great sounding with real HDCDs and excellent sounding with well recorded stuff. It was occasionally blown away by a similarly priced vinyl setup. On the other hand, I was also disappointed in vinyl sometimes. Now, with a baby in the house, forget it. My gadgets collect dust.
Cheers and keep up the good fight ;)
