Since the CD source is of 16-bit resolution, if the data is filtered using 32-bit calculations truncated to 24, any rounding at the 24th bit would be at -140 dB in amplitude. Way below ambient noise. Applying dither wouldn't make any difference, aside from being extra instructions making the DSP work harder than it has to.And since the CD source is of 16-bit resolution, any extra bits are used for calculating filter interpolation. (This is the sole reason why a DAC with digital filtering has to be of greater wordlength than the source media.) Any dither applied to "truncation" from a 32-bit *calculated* value to 24 would be acting on the interpolated data, not on the preservation of resolution.
By the way, it's gotten to the point where I no longer care if people shout that I'm wrong. (Although I never cared that much anyway.) If the explanations help just one designer put out something that truly provides superior performance, how I'm otherwise judged here don't mean jack.
