Howdy
I will agree with Todd that converting to DSD can sound great: it's what my DAC does.
Synchronous sample rate conversion is simply converting sample rates where the input and output clock rates are EXACTLY related by the sample rates, e.g. the output clock is derived from the input clock in a small integer ratio.
Asynchronous sample rate conversion is converting sample rates where the input and output clocks are independent and aren't necessarily precisely correlated. At times you may even do a ASRC when the input and output clock rates are nominally the same but are derived from physically different clocks.
What Todd objects to (and I understand his motivations) is that the original ASRC chips were designed and worked best with small changes in clock rates and that using those chips to convert everything to, say 96k has some specific problems. Where I differ with him is that I believe that some of the benefits can (but not always do) out way these problems and further that more modern ASRC chips have improved things.
This page has a lot of good SACD/DSD info: http://www.daisy-laser.com/technology/techsacd/techsacd.htm
In particular here is the correct info about the sample rate of DSD (e.g. DSD is 64 x Redbook's 44.1k) and down converting to various other standard formats: http://www.daisy-laser.com/technology/techsacd/techsacd13.htm
The question "Where does DSD come in with conversion from 16/44 to 24/96?" The answer is it doesn't. Converting to and from DSD to do sample rate conversion would be overkill and most probably more work and less accurate than standard sample rate conversion.
I don't pretend to know where Todd got "The late Julian Dunn came up with the idea of converting 16/44 to 24/96 using the golden '320/147' ratio." but sample rate conversion and in particular synchronous sample rate conversion by small integer ratios has been understood, documented and taught in basic DSP classes for many years, long before CDs and 16/44.1 let alone DVDs and 24/96 were even around.
