I almost lost my post replying to the post you deleted. Now I get to edit my post a little :) I'm not assuming you don't know this, but perhaps it will help some other people following this thread:

People get hung up on generalities when the devil is in the details of any particular implementation.

A synchronous buffer can low pass filter jitter to the length of time you want to wait for sync up and delays of the input signal. But the details that some people overlook are that a DAC isn't only used with a CD transport. Often it can be used when there is some other parallel signal, e.g. DVD video and you can't, in general wait all that long. Also customers can get upset when you wait too long to sync up after they interrupt the data stream (e.g. changing channels or skipping tracks...)
