Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: I'm not going to argue this again, when you pay attention to the details you'll see the light.

"Ignoring any arguments that can be made on a purely theoretical level (which we've had before) his question was about existing DACs."

I'm not ignoring the arguments, I'm pointing out exactly why they're flawed (see response to Slider).

"Existing DACs can't pay attention to track endings. Consumer transports don't have provisions for clock inputs from the DAC."

Unfortunate, but true.....

"Nowhere did I claim that ASRC gets rid of jitter, nor does a PLL (or other reclocker), they both filter jitter (very differently) and both cause different audible changes once the signal gets thru the DAC."

When you stated:

If, on the other hand you don't have an internal clock but reclock to a tracking clock you can avoid ASRC but loose some jitter resistance...

I thought you implied that ASRC was more resistant to jitter. I misunderstood what you stated.

"My recommendation is still to listen rather than pick a DAC based on it's implementation."

While I won't argue with that at face value, sad to say, I've noticed a marked deterioration in CD playback whenever ASRC is involved. (And I think CDs mastered from 24/96 may themselves have a very similar problem. I'm starting to hear "noise" on some recent recordings that seem similar in character to that of ASRC.) Then people lament about the demise of CD playback. (It's no longer compared to vinyl, it's compared to MP3!!) While at the same time, I cannot stand most high-rez playback. My only resort is so-called "dated" technology, and that would be my suggestion for audiophiles who happen to be frustrated with their digital playback sources.

Vintage digital playback has in a lot of cases been a real "ear opener" in demonstrating not only the lack of improvement in digital playback over the past decade, but maybe even a collective regression in such performance!!
