Re: dCS P8i Volume Control implementation?

See the thread " feeding active speakers directly from digital volume control" on this page dated 29th March. I discuss some of the practical problems with this in certain circumstances. I suspect that the P8i's volume control is the same as on the Delius and Elgar.

In regard to your further question, dCS recommend not reducing the volume below -20dBfs. This will still be very loud for discs that have been cut at high levels such as most current rock CDs and some large scale orchestral recordings in many combinations of system/room.

Using direct connection certainly provides great clarity and low coloration. Whether that alone adds up to the "best" I'll leave to personal judgement. My experience is that a sense of "drive" and presence suffers the more attenuation that there is and trying to keep well above the recommended -20dBfs can bear dividends if it is practical.

The new two box dCS (T&D8es) will almost certainly have a digital volume control,as that's the way dCS does things.
