Everything in the digital world is linear, but as the "steps" get smaller and smaller it gets closer and closer to being smoothly non-linear. But i would guess the greater the underlying variation in the original soundstream, the more difficult it is to interpolte correctly--as in the rest of the physical world. Now, if we had selectable Rochmaninoff algorithms vs Elvis alogorithms, etc. we might be able to add "prediction" to interpolation.
