Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Re: Upsampling for dummies

Thank you Todd for your lucid explanation of upsampling and the information on CDs. I am a bit wiser for it, today, than i was yesterday.

I recently auditioned two highly rated cdplayers (in their price ranges) by the same manufacturer, one with and the other without upsampling. I also auditioned a much cheaper player, but also highly rated, wich shared the WM8740 24-bit/192kHz DAC with the cheaper of the other two.

The player with upsampling sounded "different" but compared to the others (at 1/2 - 1/3 the price) I can't say, to my ear, that it was very much "better". Something was going on, but i wasn't convinced it was "real". Sort of like being in the dentist's chair with and without musak: it didn't change the underlying experience. It was more distracting than anything else. I could see no real difference bewteen the other two but the price.

Converted from our money, it was like: $1500 vs. $875 vs. $450. I think this is an easy decision.

Thanks again.

Happy listening,

John
