"I know I do.............. "
Would be interesting if you did but didn't know..... [-;
I have essentially five systems..... The main system, high-efficiency system, full-range speaker system, vintage system, and budget/portable system.... All bring unique perspectives on the music recordings...... (The vintage and budget systems share the same CD source.)
"When I built my house, I planned on having Audio in most every room.. So I made use of 'Extra' gear that I had laying around. (We all have extra gear, right?) - "
That was how it started out for me..... I once called the high-efficiency system the "B system" (it didn't initially use high-efficiency speakers)..... But it evolved into basically an alternative (but not necessarily inferior) to the main system.
"And ordered some inexpensive Receivers/amps/speakers to boot. My Rooms that I have Audio in are as Follows;
1.) My Main Music Room Downstairs
2.) Great Room Upstairs
3.) My Den
4.) My Garage
5.) Master Bathroom (My Wife's Domain) - All she knows how to do is turn on the light switch and her favorite Radio Station starts playing.
6.) My Downstairs Shop
7.) My Deck Outside"
I have a neighbor that would prohibit me from running an outside system......
"This is my 'Case' for owning a Raspberry Pi. Especially to those Audiophiles that believe you need to spend Many Thousands of Dollars to get a decent sounding Source. I have Raspberry Pies in every room... Gives me Every radio station in the World, Music from Tidal, Qobuz and my almost useless Music Library of 5,000 albums."
I run CD in all the systems, vinyl for the main and high-efficiency systems..... No streaming anywhere...... (I just cannot get sound that I think is comparable to the CD rigs.) I use either mod Philips CDC-935 changers (tube output stage), or use it as a transport to a Gustard X26 Pro DAC, via Audio Technica converter.
"Even if you buy a $10,000 Music Streamer, I'm guessing you are not going to outfit your Garage/Shop/Office System with another $10,000 Streamer."
The CD rigs I use cost less than one tenth that.....
"So, if you think that a less than $200 Investment in a Raspberry Pi would be a complete waste of money, I'm sure you could put it to good use in one of your alternate Audio Systems."
I think playing physical CDs sounds better..... Different strokes, I guess.
"You'll also have a 'reference point' of what a good streamer can sound like.. (You'll probably 'sneak' it into your Main System to try it out). Then you'll know for sure how much better your $10 Grand Streamer sounds."
I was at a dealer about a month ago, had systems north of 200 grand.... (Had Focal speakers... ) But even there, I was not impressed with the sources being used. (I've never thought FLAC files decoded in real time sounded right..... )
"This is why I always recommend a Raspberry Pi, for someone that poses the question. 'I'm thinking of getting into Streaming, What should I look at? - My Budget is $$$$$....' "
If I had more control over the "pressings" of the recordings (outside of ripping the CD collection), I'd only then consider such option.....
"So, think of the Raspberry Pi as an entry point in the world of streaming. Even if you decide that the Megabuck streamer is the 'Real Deal', you'll still have a use for the Raspberry Pi... I still use the first model of Rpi from 2011 in my Shop area..... It runs the current version of PiCorePlayer and has a whopping 256K of Memory."
I got ensconced in the "multiple systems" thing in your post..... But streaming is just not my thing.
"I may buy a Mega Buck streamer someday, if someone brings one over to my house and it beats the Raspberry Pi by a 'worthy' amount. Or a Dealer lets me audition one (with a money back return option) that will surely provide an audible reason to buy one... But even then, I'm keeping my other 9 Rpies, as I'll always have a use for them.. (They are all worth more on E-bay than I paid for them, if I decided to sell them)."
Like anything else, you need to listen and audition..... I often found with digital audio sources, more expensive isn't always better.
"Just a PSA."
Appreciate the PSA.... ;-]![]()
