The digital audio out is limited (true for all sources). Almost all can do 96/24 two channel, many can do 192/24 two channel. But if you want multi-channel, they can only do lossy compressed formats.
If you want multi-channel lossless, you *have* to use the HDMI output. Very few DACs have this input. The only one I am aware of is a recent Bryston - but it is only a stereo DAC. There just isn't a big enough market for high-quality surround sound, so everything is pretty much just A/V receivers.
