"Like all light sources, lasers will fail eventually."
Indeed so. There is , however, a further problem encountered with bona fide CD/SACD mechanisms. I am unsure what type of of mechanism the XA5400ES has but it has always been Sony practice to use true CD/SACD components in its ES players rather than universal DVD mechanisms.
True CD/SACD mechs switch between two lasers, each of which emits a wavelength suitable for one of the mediums. Not only can the lasers fail but so can the mechanism for changing between the two, often a failure after some years' use of an irreplaceable plastic cog. The problem also can affect players other than Sonys or those equipped with OEM Sony mechs.
The combination of possible laser failure with mechanical failure and the current limited availability of OEM CD/SACD mechs has resulted in my switch to mainly computer audio file storage which I see as a more viable long term strategy.
