when I played the violin in ensembles (such as St John's Smith Square, RAM or RFH in London) we would routinely tune to 440 and then 'adjust' according to the room, mood, music to be played by fractions of a tone until we felt in tune with the room and the occasion.
I don't know if others did this elsewhere but the musicians I knew and played with felt the same. And clearly, concert pianos were regularly tuned to the room and the acoustics, with very minor adjustments made in pitch to help the instrument sound its best *in that environment*.
