According to Mike Moffat, C = 256Hz sounds best, while the much more popular (at least on the interwebs) A = 432Hz is wrong. However A = 432Hz with equal-temperament tuning yields a C = 256.87Hz. It's a little hard to believe that changing the middle C by less than 1Hz can have a profound difference. But I have been extremely surprised by things that make a profound difference before...
