RE: Original - maybe/maybe not

" he full Manhattan Project is aimed at correcting temperament (I am not a musician)

I am not a musician either. However temperament concerns the ratio of frequencies (intervals) between notes i.e how an octave is subdivided to make the 12 tones. Pitch, on the other hand and in relation to this, affects how high or low all the notes are. As far as I can see the gadget is concerned with pitch, not temperament as it does not alter the intervals between notes but shifts the whole lot up or down so that C3=256. However I may be wrong but I have not read anything so far to suggest that I am.

Both temperament and pitch have changed over history and Moffat seems mainly to be concerned with pitch relating to his favoured genre of music (bluegrass) over a period when certain great instruments were made - a couple of decades in the early 20th century. He then applies the result to other types of music and he discovers that he likes the effect of this. However if all are set to C3=256,that then ignores the correct pitch for that other genre of music which will have varied over history, country and even orchestra or other group ( it is, for example, too high for much baroque music but too low for classical music composed in the late 20th century).

So what this gadget does is homogenise pitch for all types of music which is why I talk about loss of integrity, even if it is liked subjectively.
