Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

RE: Ayre QX-5 & C-5xemp

There actually is a way, but it is buried deep in the on-screen menu that requires a video monitor to access. Ayre created a bunch of "macros" that would navigate the on-screen menu without the need for a monitor.

At the time, the last thing we wanted to do was to contribute to "audiophile nervosa" by allowing people the option of comparing CD and SACD layers. The SACD layer is always going to sound better, so why bother dicking around with it?

We never foresaw the day when it might be possible that the CD layer played through an external DAC might sound better than the SACD layer played through the internal DAC. Since then we have figured out how to completely eliminate jitter generated by the S/PDIF format (and variants).

I guess it is possible that the CD layer played through the QX-5 Twenty would sound better than the SACD layer through the C-5xe - but I would actually be kind of surprised. Rather than making a mountain out of a molehill, why don't you try it the way suggested. After the QX-5 Twenty is broken in and if you feel like the SACDs played through the C-5xe sound only mediocre in comparison to CDs played through the QX-5 Twenty, then post again and we can figure some way to test your theory.

Cheers,
Charles Hansen
