If we could find 100 C-5xe owners that were interested (and wanted to play their actual SACDs rather than ripping them to a storage device), It would be fairly easy for Ayre to make a PCB that would replace the main audio/DAC PCB and provide digital outputs for any kind of disc. That would essentially turn the C-5xe from a mutli-format player into a multi-format transport. But unless we could sell at least 100 of them, we would end up losing money on the deal.
I would estimate the cost of doing this at around $1000 (just off the top of my head) and I don't think there are 100 people with players that are 5 to 15 years old who would want to pay $1000 to avoid ripping their discs instead of playing them. But what do I know? Maybe we could sell 500 such PCBs - there are well over 1000 C-5xe's out there and I don't think any of them have ended up in the landfill.
