The DSD stream doesn't really lock onto the data, the 8x oversampled audio data is processed (delta-sigma) to convert it to a DSD compatible stream so that both DSD and PCM can be further processed and converted by the same D/A, run at an appropriate clock rate based on the input sample rate.
