I also understand that when you can hear a greater variety of sound, that means the component is better than the one you had before. For example, the Levinson 27.5 will yield a greater variety of sound differences (different recordings) than my old ARC Classic 30.
CD's did sound more exciting with the Classic 30 though. But More dynamic with the Levinson 27.5, I realize amps are off topic but I just use it as an illustration of my point.
Perhaps I should borrow a CD12. :)
